Next year, I hope to be able to drive to Detroit, and maybe go to Canada, or other cities along the way (I'm from NJ). However, I only want to go if the show in Detroit is a lot better than the one in NY. Thoughts?

In a word - yes.
In more words - the NAIAS is still the standard for the Auto Show circuit to follow and typically has more than just some cars on displays. A lot of these exhibits have extra things to do or see while you're there. I hope the NYIAS has some too but I doubt it would be as grand as Detroit's. If you have to pick one, do Detroit. If NYIAS is much closer....do that one first.

Then enjoy! I have never been to that part of Canada. You'll have to tell me how it is.

I'd do both since NYIAS is just 15 minutes away from me and is 3 months after NAIAS. I think I just want an excuse to do a 1 week road trip though.
